5 traits of today’s homebuyers

A survey conducted for the trade magazine Builder by American Lives, a consumer research firm based in California, attempted to outline the top five traits of today’s homebuyers. The study found the following:

• They are young. Most are under 45. Half said they had annual household incomes of $75,000 or less. Two-thirds are married.

• They are frugal. They consistently told surveyors they were eager to live a simple lifestyle.

• They worry about their financial future. About 70 percent said the economy is “not so good” with 27 percent saying it was getting worse, 27 percent saying it was getting better and two-thirds saying it would get better in a year. Some 55 percent said they were concerned that they might lose their jobs.

• They see themselves as energy efficient but not necessarily “green.” About 32 percent said they’d pay extra for energy-efficient features but only 16 percent said they’d pay extra for recycled or renewable construction materials.

• Neighborhood is important. Ninety-five percent said they thought the community was as important as the home itself. Seventy-nine percent wanted the most square footage they could afford, but 69 percent said they’d consider a smaller home in the right neighborhood.

Florida property taxes not high, not low

Using 2009 U.S. Census data, the nonprofit Tax Foundation created a state-by-state comparison of property taxes using three criteria: median property tax paid, property tax as percentage of a home’s worth, and property tax as a percentage of median income. In all three comparisons, Florida ranked around the middle, New Jersey came in at No. 1 for most expensive, and Louisiana finished at No. 50.

The median property tax paid on a home in Florida was $1,773, which puts the state at No. 23 in the state-by-state comparison. New Jersey ranked No. 1 with the median homeowner paying $6,579; in No. 50, Louisiana, the median homeowner shelled out only $243. The median property tax nationwide was $1,917.

As a percentage of the home’s value, Florida ranked No. 22 based on a median home price of $182,400. New Jersey again ranked No. 1 based on a median price of $348,300, while Louisiana’s median home value was $135,400. The national median home value used for the study was $185,200.

As a percentage of homeowner’s income, Florida ranked No. 18 based on a median of $53,595 per household. New Jersey’s median income hit $88,343, while Louisiana homeowners made $50,545. The national median income was $63,306.
